Northumberland - Rona Maynard, author and former Editor-in-Chief of Chatelaine magazine, will speak in Cobourg next month about her personal experience with depression and mental illness. The event, hosted by the Caring for Generations Society of the Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation, will take place Thursday, May 10th at 7 p.m. at the Best Western Cobourg Inn. The event is open to the public.
Ms. Maynard will speak on the topic, From Wanting to Die to Loving My Life: How I Beat Depression. Passionate, candid and disarmingly funny, this presentation shows why Rona is one of Canada's most powerful advocates for the mentally ill. Learn why she's not ashamed to have a history of mental illness and what you can do to ensure that diseases of the mind get the same respect as diseases of the body.
Ms. Maynard has been a champion for mental health since 1997, when she shared her history of depression in a landmark Chatelaine editorial that inspired a truth-telling conversation among millions of readers across the country. She personally answered countless letters and phone calls from readers struggling with their own or a family member's mental illness.
“The Society has organized many informative lectures for donors and the general public in the past,” says Louise Stevenson, Chair of the Caring for Generations Society, “We know there is a lot of interest in the subject of mental illness and are thrilled to be able to bring Rona Maynard to the community to speak candidly on the subject. We hope you will join us for this special lecture.”
Tickets are $20 and are available at the Foundation Office, Best Western Cobourg Inn or securely on-line through Event Brite (http://nhhfoundation.eventbrite.com). Special thanks to the Joseph S. Stauffer Foundation and the RBC Foundation for their support in making this event possible.

VERMICULITE FOUND @ 7 SCHOOLS
The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board recently discovered vermiculite in 11  buildings, seven of them currently operating schools.  Vermiculite is a kind of insulation that was used commonly in older buildings.  It is known to contain a very small amount of asbestos. The vermiculite was used in those schools’ block walls, and in between the outside and inside walls.  Health and environmental experts have advised the Board that, as long as the vermiculite is isolated, sealed and in good condition, it does not pose a hazard.  This is the case in the schools where it was found.  Please note that vermiculite was not found in our school.  To see the letter that went home to parents at the seven schools, please see the home page at www.kprschools.ca

All stakeholders (students, parents/guardians, staff, community) input is appreciated and will be reviewed and considered in making final recommendations for board and ministry approval.

New Nutrition Policy for 2011-12

A new school nutrition policy affecting food and beverages sold to students goes into effect in all elementary and secondary schools for the 2011-12 school year.

The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board’s policy meets Ministry of Education requirements.  The goal is to make all schools as healthy as possible, since research shows well-nourished students tend to do better in school.  The new policy applies to all food and drinks sold in schools - whether in cafeterias or vending machines - and at school events, including bake sales and sports events.  It also applies to school programs such as catered lunches and pizza days.

The nutrition policy does not apply to lunches or snacks that students bring from home.  Parents and guardians are still the ones who decide what goes into their child’s or teen’s lunch box.

The policy divides food and beverages into three categories:

Sell Most - These products must make up at least 80% of all food and drink choices available.  They have more nutrients and less fat, sugar and salt. This includes items such as fresh fruit and vegetables and lower fat milk.
Sell Less  - These products must make up 20% or less of all food and drink choices. They may have slightly higher amounts of fat, sugar or sodium than items in the Sell Most category. This includes items such as baked snacks.
Not Permitted for Sale - These products generally are not nutritious and have high amounts of fat, sugar or sodium. This includes chocolate bars and deep fried foods.  Food and beverages in this category may not be sold in schools.

Schools have already been moving in this direction for several years, and many local caterers and lunch providers have already made the switch.  For pizza suppliers, for example, this includes offering whole grain crust, lower fat cheese, lean meat and vegetable toppings, and low sodium tomato sauce.

For additional information, please call the school or see the new Nutrition Policy posted at www.kprschools.ca   Details on the provincial nutrition standards are posted at  www.ontario.ca/healthyschools, in Healthy Foods for Healthy Schools.
